HOW TO HINTS GIVE A BIRD A SHOWER
|
Bathing is an important part of companion bird's "personal hygiene" that
often gets over looked. In captivity, you have to provide alternate means
for your bird.
SHOWERS
You can produce "Rain" by gently misting a bird from a spray bottle or, as
you see in the video, you can lightly sprinkle him with the spray attachment
of a garden hose. NOTE: You can use your birds cage if you prefer
outdoors and do not have an aviary. This way you eliminate any risk of your
bird flying away. Remember not to leave your bird UN Attended out in the
sun. We use the fine mist setting, always leaving some areas they can
escape the mist when they are done. In the second video we use a
bathroom shower. We put a stick across the tub since we have so many
birds that get along. You can also use the spray handle of a kitchen sink
also works well. Be careful not to direct the water too forcefully as the upper
respiratory tract and sinuses of birds are fairly exposed. The length of time
will vary depending on your bird. 5 minutes is plenty time.
"A Mini Pond" can be created by using shallow pans, or dog food bowls
work great – even the kitchen sink. Remember, though, that your bird may
insist on using his water bowl regardless of other options you may offer.
Sometimes, water alone is not enough.
Many stores offer skin conditioners if your bird has additional skin
conditions. We recommend showering your bird if it is exposed to any toxic
environments such as getting hairspray or someone has smoked around
your bird.
There are a few wonderful shower perches available in stores or can be
ordered on the Internet.
